July Weeks 3 & 4 2008
The summer bite is still very good on Guntersville. The jig bite still never really panned out the way I like, but the top-water bite and the deep bite are both producing all day. The water level his past week has been very low, which only helps the bite. The heat of course also helps the bite, and if the wind isn’t blowing, the bite is even better. We’ve had a good bit of wind the last couple of weeks.
We’re catching more quality fish on top now, with bigger fish mixed in better than earlier this summer. A Pop-R or Zara Spook Jr are still the best baits for me, but the old Spittin’ Image has taken it’s share as well lately. It’s just fun to be out there, even if for only a few short hours it’s pretty easy to find active fish. Stripe and other species are mixing it up with the bass.
The schooling is better this year due to the lack of grass mats, the grass got delayed this spring and the mats never really developed, leaving a lot of open water for schooling activity over the submerged grass.
One of the best areas I’ve seen for schooling action has been in front of the docks between Ossa Win Tha and Mill Creek. It’s easy to see the bigger fish when they come up, they blow baitfish out of the water all over the place. It’s a blast to watch and a lot of fun to fish. The inside grass line and ridge in front of Boshart is still very good, and we are still catching schooling fish in front of Mink Creek. It’s unreal how many fish have been in that area all year long.
I’m still catching a few good fish on a jig, but it has been very spotty and scattered. The 10” worm is still out performing the jig on the grass lines and in deeper water. Hopping the worm on the deeper ledges is the deal for big fish from 12 to 20 feet deep.
The schooling bite is great for kids, I’ve had numerous kids out this summer and they’ve had a blast with the top-water bite.
Live for Christ –
I want to pass on a “happy birthday” to Michelle…! She turned 9 today! Happy Birthday Michelle, we love you and miss you!
I’ve noticed how we like to talk a lot more about grace then we do about obedience. It would be nice if Jesus just “forgave” us and didn’t care how we live our lives here on earth, but in His Word that’s not how He described our walk with Him to be. We are sinners by nature, and we are more so sinners by choice. God changes our spiritual life only when we change our earthly life through obedience. If we think of our Christian walk as “practice” for living in Heaven, then our failure becomes more clear and our desire to improve becomes stronger. What things do we do here on earth that we are not going to get away with in Heaven? The truly saved are known not by what they say, but by how they live their lives for Christ. Will God allow us to swear around His children in Heaven? Will He allow us to get drunk on the weekends in Heaven? There are so many things we need to think of and improve in our walk before He can use us here, and that He is certainly not going to allow in Heaven. I can only believe in how important it is for us to practice our long, Heavenly life while we struggle through our short earthly life.
